Los Altos

In 1949, many residents were dissatisfied with the zoning policy of Santa Clara County.  Also, there was a constant threat of being annexed by neighboring Palo Alto and Mountain View, so they decided to incorporate.  Los Altos became the 11th city in Santa Clara COunty on Dec 1, 1952.  Los Altos is bordered by Los Altos Hills to the west, Palo Alto to the north and west, Mountain View to the north and east, Sunnyvale to the east and Cupertino to the southeast.
 
Los Altos has a population of 289,355 as of 2020.  It is the 247th largest city in California and 1316th largest city in the United States. From the most recent census, average household income is $326,456 with a poverty rate of 2.83%.  The median rental costs in recent years comes to $3188 per month and the median house value is $2,147,502.  The median age in Los Altos is 46.1 years and according to the ACS, 61.62% are white, 31.43% are asian and the rest are other races. The overall home ownership rate is 81%.
 
Los Altos School District operates seven elementary and two junior high schools and is a top rated school district in the State of California. LASD serves K-8 students from portions of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View and Palo Alto.  All nine of the schools have been recognized as California DistinguishedSchools, and three as National Blue Ribbon Schools.  The LASD is consistently ranked among the top one percent of the over 1000 school districts in all of California, demonstrating excellence in math, science, language and history.
 
One of the popular landmarks in Los Altos is the start of Apple corporation, ‘Apple Garage’.  It is a house in a suburban community in Los Altos where Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak worked to launch the successful and now a major multinational technology company. Other than that, Los Altos is well known for hiking because they have many Preserve areas and trails. Such as Windy Hill, Hidden Villa Farm, Redwood Grove Nature PReserve and San Andreas Fault Trail.
